Caring For Your Art Work
After choosing a reputable Picture Framer to frame your artwork whether it be needlart, watercolour, pastel, oil, acrylic, multi-media or any one of the plethora of creative, sentimental and/or visually appealing items you may choose to frame and display there are ways to make that framed masterpiece survive longer!
What: Don’t hang Artwork where it will be exposed to extremes in temperature.
Why: Extremes in temperature may cause paper and wood to dry out and warp.
What: Avoid hanging Artwork where it will be exposed damp conditions.
Why: Damp encourages fungal growth, which is likely to show as brown stains on the picture. Damp will also cause your Artwork to ripple touch and possibly stick to the glass. Humidity and damp will fade watercolours and printed textiles.
What: Do not hang art work in direct sunlight.
Why: The colours are likely to fade, and the paper will discolour and weaken.
What: Avoid using household cleaners to clean frames, it is best to dry dust frames. If you do use a glass cleaner, apply it to a cloth and not directly onto the glass, avoid any contact with the frame. Try to use only a damp cloth, microfibre cloths are excellent.
Why: A single puff of aerosol can damage some frames. Moisture may get behind the glass and damage the Artwork.
What: Try to inspect your Artwork once a year. Check that the backing tape is firmly in place. If there is evidence of discolouration, dots, or ripples appearing in the artwork, or insects under the glass, it is wise to have the piece dismantled and the problem corrected. Also check the cord or wire supporting the Artwork for signs of wear, and replace it as necessary.
Why: We are able to remove the Artwork from its frame, inspect it, and treat any problems, this will hopefully prevent any further deterioration.
What: If your Artwork is hinged, always store it the right way up.
Why: If the Artwork is stored any other way the hinges may be weakened, and artwork may slip.
What: Always pick up your frame by both sides.
Why: You may damage or weaken your frame by handling it incorrectly.
